Monroe Co. Marine returns to East Tennessee

An East Tennessee Marine is home after a seven-month deployment to Afghanistan. Private First Class Kyle Day returned to his Monroe County home Friday evening, where he was greeted by family and friends.

"I feel good. Finally, to see me friends and family - it's really nice. Very relaxing," he said.

His grandmother, Ginger Day, said she is thrilled he made it back to Tennessee safely.

"It's so good to welcome them home under good circumstances. But never, ever forgetting that some came home in a different way, gave it their all," she said.

PFC Day, a 2010 graduate of Sequoyah High School, was a close friend of fellow Marine, Lance Corporal Frankie Watson. Watson was killed while on duty in Afghanistan last September.

Day left for Afghanistan in January, where family members say he served as military police and trained Afghan soldiers.

Family and friends met the Marine along Highway 411 in Vonore, where local law enforcement and motorcycle groups escorted him to his home.

He will stay in Tennessee for three weeks before returning to Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.
