Thin line between Sandy rain and snow keeps road crews busy

The potential for piles of snow in the higher elevations of East Tennessee from Superstorm Sandy kept road crews busy Tuesday.  That includes Cocke County where the highway department maintains 700 miles of roads, many of which are in mountainous areas.

Superstorm Sandy is causing flight delays and cancellations throughout the country.

So far, more than 15,000 flights have been cancelled and in Knoxville, we are seeing the effects.

Robin Vanleigh is sort of lucky, "I'm going from here to Chicago to Phoenix."

She's not headed to the Northeast, but she's still worried about her flight plan.

"So far, everything is on time, but since I am flying into Chicago and Sandy is making her way closer and closer, I am getting a little concerned that I might get stuck there," explained Robin.

Road crews are working to clear a Monroe County highway where snow and ice has made driving treacherous.

According to TDOT, the Cherohala Skyway (State Route 165) in Monroe County, from Tellico Plains to the state line, is extremely hazardous Tuesday morning.  There are reports of more than two inches of ice on the roadway.

Update 6:31 pm.

Tennessee Highway Patrol has identified the driver of a semi-truck who was killed in a single vehicle accident on I-75 southbound near, mile marker 50, in Athens on Saturday at approximately 1:00 pm.

Donald J. Barnes, 53, from Union City, Tenn. lost control of his semi-truck, ran off the roadway and struck a tree head-on.  After the crash, THP said the semi-truck's cab burst into flames.  Barnes was inside the cab when his truck caught fire, and eventually the flames completely engulfed the entire tractor trailer.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars in grant money is headed to Sweetwater from the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

$377,600 will go toward a visitor center and a trailhead project in downtown Sweetwater.

Monroe Co. publisher recovers, paper on hold

The leader of the Monroe County Daily News Express is recovering at U.T. Medical Center after being hit head-on in a car wreck in Greenback.

According to T.H.P., William Daniel Hall, 31 was hit head-on by Nicholas Steffa, 41 of Sweetwater. Troopers indicated in their report that Steffa may have been impaired when he was driving. They said charges are pending against Steffa.

Meanwhile, the newspaper Hall owns and works on daily is on hold as staffers reorganize their priorities.

Interstate traffic may be slowed by oversized loads

Oversized truck loads could bring parts of Interstate 75 to a crawl Monday night.

TDOT says the loads will move through McMinn and Bradley counties starting at 8 o'clock and will last through the overnight hours.

Traffic will be affected from mile marker 49 to 36.

TDOT says another move is scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, as well as Monday and Tuesday of next week.
