Madisonville teen killed in fiery crash


A Monroe County teenager is dead after a fiery crash in Madisonville early Monday morning.

It happened around 2:30 a.m. on Niles Ferry Road between Twelve Oaks Drive and Southern Hills Drive.

Denver Hedrick, 18, was driving south when he lost control in a left curve, a Tennessee Highway Patrol report shows.

His car went off the road, hit a tree and caught fire.

Hedrick died at the scene.


Suspects who tied up and robbed elderly man are in custody


The three people who were accused of tying up a Niota and cooking pizzas while robbing him have been captured.

Investigators said Charlene Hayes, James Wagner and Jeffrey Mounts were arrested early Wednesday morning in Siloam Springs, Arkansas. The three had been staying in a local motel and were caught driving a stolen truck.

Accused Cherokee Forest squatter pleads guilty


The man accused of making himself a home in the Cherokee National Forest has pleaded guilty.

Terry L. Sharkey was charged with damaging national forest property, cutting protected trees, and using the forest as his home. He pleaded guilty to the six charges against him in federal court on Monday.

He will be sentenced on February 17. He will remain in custody until then.

Forest Service obtains Trail of Tears land


ATHENS, Tenn. (AP) - A nonprofit has conveyed 222 acres containing part of the Cherokee Trails of Tears to the U.S. Forest Service.

The Conservation Fund purchased a 392-acre property in 2013 that contained a portion of the trail. According to the group, it conveyed 170 acres to the Forest Service earlier this year and the remainder last week.

National Muscadine Festival kicks off Friday


(WBIR-Sweetwater) 10News Reporter Katie Roach traveled to Sweetwater to jump feet first into covering the 2014 National Muscadine Festival Thursday morning.

While stomping the fruit in a barrel, Katie spoke with JD from Tsali Notch Vineyard.

JD said that a muscadine is different from a grape. However, it is still used for making wine.

The festival starts Friday and runs until Sunday afternoon.

Monroe Co. officials find missing teenager


Officials located a teen who went missing nearly a week ago.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office confirmed Trina Wagner, 17, safely returned home Monday.

Authorities said she may have run away from her Tellico Plains home last Tuesday.
