Athens house fire kills mother of three | News
(WBIR-Athens) A house fire in Athens killed a mother of three Wednesday morning.
Firefighters said several other people in the home, including several children under the age of ten, managed to safely escape.
Firefighters said the fire started about 5:30 a.m. at a home on McMinn County Road 561 in Athens.
Marvin Guffey told WRCB that his granddaughter, Michelle Guffey, died in the fire.
"She's just a good, hard-working, child-loving mother," said her grandfather Marvin Guffey. "I'm gonna remember the sweet little granddaughter that she always has been."
The American Red Cross is helping the family find a temporary place to stay. Firefighters said the home is likely a total loss.
State bomb and arson investigators are trying to determine what caused the fire.
