"This is a difficult decision to make, but we believe it is in the best interests of our students, faculty, and schools," Monroe County Director of Schools Tim Blankenship said in a statement. "We have monitored our absences closely over the past few weeks, and our schools have shown a larger-than-normal percentage of absences."

According to Blankenship, over 10 percent of Monroe students were absent countywide. In a single school officials saw over 17 percent who were absent.

Illness also has affected staff and faculty.

It's expected that school will resume Monday. Custodians are sanitizing the schools.

Sweetwater Schools also confirmed that the illness is flu-related. According to the system, a number of teachers and students have been out in the 1,500-student district.

Custodians have been given cleaning supplies and are expected to work this weekend to sanitize schools.

Just last week, Loudon County and Lenoir City schools closed because of sickness.
