Monroe Co. officials dispel rumors of school closure
News

(WBIR - Monroe County) Monroe County school officials met with hundreds of parents Thursday night to squash rumors about a school closing.

There had been rumors circulating in the area that Coker Creek Elementary would be closed due to budget cuts. But Monroe County Director of Schools, Tim Blankenship, told parents that isn't true, and tried to reassure parents the school is safe.

"Coker Creek is not getting short-changed. We spend a lot of money at Coker Creek," explained Blankenship. "I will say this, closing Coker Creek is not on the table this year."

Blankenship went on to say he reviews the school budget every year, and reiterated there aren't plans to close the school.

An online petition to keep the school open was started after rumors of its closure began. As of Thursday night, it had received 438 signatures.
