New Athens auto parts plant to bring 200 jobs
News

A new auto parts plant is expected to open in Athens late this summer, bringing 200 new jobs to McMinn County.

HP Pelzer announced plans Monday to build a 185,000 sq. foot manufacturing facility at the Mt. Verd Industrial Park - an investment valued at $28 million.

The company manufactures acoustic systems and interior trim for vehicles. Its Athens location will supply interior trims to many auto assembly plants, including several in the Southeast.

The McMinn County Economic Development Authority is selling Partners Development 23 acres for the facility site. Partners has contracted Blaine Construction to build the facility. Both companies are located in Knoxville.

Site preparation is beginning this month and the plant is scheduled for completion in September.

The company, headquartered in Germany, operates 37 manufacturing sites and five technical centers, which employ more 5,000 people in 18 countries.

Governor Bill Haslam said in a statement he's enthusiastic about the new facility in McMinn County.

"I want to thank HP Pelzer for its investment in Tennessee and the new jobs created in McMinn County," said Haslam. "Our Jobs4TN strategy recognizes the auto sector as a key industry cluster where Tennessee has a distinct advantage with more than 900 auto suppliers and manufacturers, and today's announcement helps us toward our goal of becoming the No. 1 location in the Southeast for high quality jobs."
