Athens PD searching for man paying with counterfeit bills

Athens police are searching for a man they say walked into several businesses and paid with fake $100 bills.

They say the man used the counterfeit cash at six area businesses, including a CVS drug store and Ingles grocery store.

So far, police have collected about $600 of the fake bills.

A current $100 bill is filled with security features like a watermark, hologram and special strip that says what currency it is.

"The one he was using was this bill here, and you can see the one with the president was real small. I'll show you a newer one, it's the larger of the photos," said Detective Heith Willis.

Officers say the suspect was using an older version of the $100 bill from the early '90s that's not supposed to be in circulation, but an unknowing cashier may not catch it.

Police say they're following some active leads on the suspect right now.
