Monroe Co. constable facing drug charges re-elected


Election results from Thursday night show Monroe County voters have re-elected a constable who is facing charges for selling drugs.

Back in March, the Monroe County Sheriff's Department arrested constable Tommy Joe Jones, Sr.

Prosecutors charged him with eight counts for selling and delivering prescription pills. Indictments say Jones was dealing drugs while holding a gun on his hip.

Thursday night, he was up for re-election and voters decided to keep him.

Day after elections, legal fight over Monroe Sheriff's race continues


(WBIR-Madisonville) The current sheriff of Monroe County plans to file an injunction over newly elected Randy White, because of his qualifications.

Bill Bivins, the democratic incumbent, told 10News he will file the paperwork next week.

Last month, the commission that oversees law enforcement officers in Tennessee, or POST, announced White isn't certified to be on the ballot, but it was too late to remove his name from the ballot because early voting had already started.

Texting while driving accident victims team up to help others


Law enforcement in McMinn County hope lessons learned after a texting and driving accident. will inspire other drivers to put down the phone.

Back in June, teenager Nick Austin took his eyes off the road for a few seconds to send a text. A moment later, he crashed head on into McMinn County deputy Randy Gabrel.

Both survived the serious crash with injuries. They later met and formed an unlikely friendship.

Mom charged under drug-addicted baby law going to rehab


UPDATE:

A Monroe County woman will be the first in Tennessee to plead guilty to charges of giving birth to a baby who tested positive for meth.

Back in July - Mallory Loyola was the first mother charged under a new law that punishes mothers who use drugs while pregnant.

Tuesday, she entered a guilty plea to avoid jail time. Loyola's attorney says it's the best resolution. She'll avoid jail time, and instead get the help she needs.

Monroe Co. school buses get GPS tracking and wi-fi


Several Monroe County school buses will go high-tech this year.

The school system is testing a pilot program in ten of its buses. They will add technology that enables G.P.S. tracking of the buses that also includes Wi-Fi.

School officials can track where the buses are at any time. The system can even send an alert if the bus has a mechanical problem.

Officials say it will benefit the school system and the students.

Two groups plan to sue Madisonville over Clean Water Act violations


(WBIR - Monroe County) Madisonville could soon face a lawsuit by two environmental groups who said the town is violating the Clean Water Act.

The Tennessee Clean Water Network and The Watershed Association of the Tellico Reservoir issued a 60-day notice Monday to Madisonville, saying isn't doing all it should to keep its water clean for residents and the environment.
