POST: Monroe sheriff candidate not eligible for office

No matter what the voters of Monroe County decide at the polls next month, one candidate for sheriff is not eligible to serve.

Randy White is running against current Sheriff Bill Bivens to be the county's top cop. Now, an investigation by the Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Commission has determined that White does not meet the requirements to be sheriff.

Former McMinn deputy gets judicial diversion

A former McMinn County deputy who pleaded guilty to official oppression will eventually have a clear record if he stays out of trouble.

Justin Hester, 31, will serve two years of probation and receive judicial diversion if he keeps the terms of that agreement.

A TBI investigation found Hester made several undocumented traffic stops and took prescription drugs from the cars. He didn't charge the drivers or turn over the drugs as evidence.

Police: Man stole donations meant for sick kids

Athens Police are looking for a man who walked into a local Walmart earlier this month, and walked out with a container of donations meant for sick kids.

According to Detective Josh Rhodes, the man caught on surveillance camera on July 5 took a container of money meant for the Children's Miracle Network. He used a two-wheeled cart that he also stole from the store.

The cart and the donation container were loaded into a small, light-colored car and the thief drove away.

McMinn county scam impersonating local sheriff, authorities

The McMinn County Sheriff's Department is warning area residents about a recent phone scam where the caller is impersonating law enforcement and local authorities.

Escaped Monroe inmate "tired of running" turns himself in

A Monroe County inmate who escaped from a work detail last month has turned himself in.

Tony Joe "T.J." Carroll and another inmate, Ricky Burnett, were working at a convenience center July 18th when they stole an SUV belonging to one of the site supervisors and drove away.

Burnett was caught a week later and now faces additional charges of escape and theft.

Athens sisters safe after paddleboarding from GA to SC

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - Two Tennessee women are safe after a storm blew their paddleboards from a Georgia island to a South Carolina island.

Twenty-seven-year-old Cayci Underwood and 21-year-old Summer Underwood set out from Tybee Island, Georgia, when they were caught by stormy weather and spent hours on the water Tuesday.

They abandoned their paddleboard when they were is sight of Hilton Head Island and it took 45 minutes to make it ashore, nearly 8 miles from where they started.

TBI: Three arrests made in July 4th murder

(WBIR) The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation arrested three suspects in a McMinn County murder on the Fourth of July.

McMinn County deputies found the body of Tyler W.T. Womack, 20, at the home of his friend in Athens. Officials said the house had also been burglarized.

TBI said they arrested Thursday morning Thomas Odum, 48, Martha A. Thompson, 42, and Amanda L. Britnell, 34. All three suspects admitted they were involved in the crime, according to a TBI release.
